Joomla 2.5 Beta to be released December 20th 2011

Joomla 2.5On November 30th, 2011, Jean Marie Simonet wrote on the Joomla community blog:

“We plan to release Version 2.5 beta on or before December 20th.”

The upcoming non-beta release is scheduled to be released in January of 2012, but it looks like Joomla addicts will be able to get a taste of the new 2.5 version of the popular CMS.

The new features have not been announced, but Jean writes:

“To make this schedule, we have until December 12th to propose and test new features. “

Does this mean the developers are keeping a lid on the new enhancements (other than improved search) because they are not ready?  Or are they not exactly sure what addition will be made?  Either way, hopefully the Joomla developer team can meet their deadline so all of us Joomla enthusiasts can see for ourselves what all the fuss is about.

Think you’re ready for Joomla 2.5?  Make sure you’re prepared!

Preparing for Joomla! 2.5 – Coming January 2012

Joomla 2.5The votes are in! As of August 09, 2011, the Joomla! community voted the next version number to be 2.5, instead of 1.8.   Calling the January 2012 release of Joomla! version 1.8 would have continued on after the currently available 1.6 and 1.7 releases, but the x.5 (meaning long term release) won out in the end.

With January coming fast, the big question that are making companies and their webmasters nervous is whether or not they need to upgrade their current installation to the latest Joomla! version.  In a previous article titled “What’s New in Joomla! 1.7 And Should You Upgrade” I discussed why you should or should not upgrade to Joomla! 1.7, and found the answer to be:  yes.  However, there are some things to consider before upgrading to Joomla! 2.5 in January. This tutorial shows how a button can be added within a post/page/article wherever you want it to be.  The only choices that need to be made, is whether the Artisteer template was created in version 3.x or 2.x, and whether the link opens in the same window or in a new one. Continue reading

What’s New in Joomla! 1.7 And Should You Upgrade

Joomla 1.7Web designers everywhere are still getting used to all the new added features of Joomla! 1.6, but now Joomla! 1.7 is here.  Web designers who enjoyed all of the brilliant new changes like Access Control lists and multiple themes to a single template may be expecting the same amount of updates to the 1.7 version.  They will be sorely disappointed.  Joomla! 1.7 has a few changes but nowhere near the amount as the previous update.

It took 3 years to produce Joomla! 1.6 after 1.5, but only 6 months to come out with 1.7 which is supposed to be the beginning of a 6 month revision to revision cycle.  The down side is less new features, but that boon is far outweighed by the ability to keep on top of security through more frequent updating.
